Open only or open and close
Many so-called automatic umbrellas only open automatically. “Open and close” models also close at the press of a button: all that’s left is to push the shaft back in to put them away.
The weight
The mechanism adds around 100 g and a few centimetres compared with an equivalent manual model.
If the mechanism jams
In nine cases out of ten, the umbrella was put away still damp or badly folded. Open it, let it dry open, check that no rib is caught in the canopy, then fold it back rib by rib.
