Mini umbrella: how to choose one that really fits in your pocket

7 November 2026

The best umbrella isn’t the sturdiest. It’s the one you have with you when the shower hits. A perfect model left in the hallway is no use at all.

The only number that decides: folded length

You soon forget the weight. The length you don’t: it tells you whether the umbrella fits or not.

  • 18 to 20 cm : coat pocket, small handbag, glovebox, side pocket of a backpack.
  • 21 to 25 cm : normal-sized handbag, tote bag, backpack.
  • 28 to 32 cm : that’s no longer a mini, it’s a standard folding umbrella. You need a bag.

Measure the pocket or pouch where it will live before you order. That’s the only check that matters.

Weight: when you stop noticing it

Below 250 g, you no longer feel the umbrella in a bag. Between 250 and 400 g, you feel it but it’s still acceptable. Beyond that, it ends up staying at home.

Open diameter: don’t dream

A mini stays a mini. Count on a diameter of 90 to 100 cm: enough to cover one person and their bag, not two people. If you often walk as a pair, you need a second, larger umbrella for planned journeys.

Manual or automatic?

The automatic mechanism adds around 100 g and two to three centimetres. On a mini, that’s a lot. The smallest models open by hand: that’s the price of discretion.

The automatic keeps a real advantage: you open it one-handed, coming out of the metro with a bag in the other. It’s up to you to decide what matters most.

Three folds, five folds: what changes

The more folds, the shorter the umbrella when closed, but the finer the structure. Three folds is the right compromise. Five folds gives a tiny object, best kept as a backup: it isn’t an everyday umbrella.

The habit of people who never get wet

They don’t have one good umbrella. They have two or three, placed wherever they pass: one in the everyday bag, one in the car, one at the office. At under €30 each, it’s the only method that really works.

And what about the “anti-UV” label?

Many minis have an anti-UV treated canopy, often advertised as UPF 50+. That’s useful as a sunshade in summer. We always write “according to the manufacturer” when we don’t have the test certificate in front of us.

In summary

Look at the folded length above all, aim for under 250 g, accept a diameter of around 95 cm, and take two rather than one.

Our pocket models are listed under mini umbrellas. For very windy days, see storm umbrellas.
