Storm umbrella
It’s the wind, not the rain, that breaks an umbrella. Our storm models have a double canopy that lets air through and fibreglass ribs that bend instead of snapping.

How to choose an umbrella that stands up to wind
Three things matter, in this order.
1. The double canopy
Two layered canopies with a vent between them: the gust passes through instead of pushing up under the canopy. This is what stops it from blowing inside out.
2. The rib material
Fibreglass bends and then springs back into place. Steel, on the other hand, bends out of shape for good. Count the ribs too: the more there are, the less the canopy flaps.
3. Size, depending on use
105 cm in diameter is enough for one person and their bag. Above 120 cm, wind resistance drops: you’re better off with a large umbrella for calm days and a more compact model when it blows.
What we don’t write
You’ll often see “withstands 100 km/h”. We don’t state a speed until we’ve measured it ourselves. No umbrella survives a real storm: in a strong gust, hold it facing into the wind, and if it flips, turn it back round with the wind.
