Children’s umbrella: five criteria

1. The size

A diameter of 70 to 90 cm is enough up to around age 8. With a bigger one, the child can no longer hold the shaft upright and catches the wind.

2. The opening

Before age 6, choose a manual one: an automatic mechanism springs open fast and can catch a child off guard. Check that your child can close it alone.

3. The rib tips

They should be rounded and firmly attached, because a child’s umbrella travels at the face height of other children.

4. Being seen

Transparent models let the child see ahead, and reflective strips make them visible at the end of the day, when it is already dark.

5. Storing it

A wrist strap and a cover prevent half of the umbrellas that get left behind at school.
