Automatic umbrella stuck: what to do

7 November 2026

Nine faults in ten come from two things: moisture left in the mechanism, or forced folding. Both can often be fixed at home.

It no longer opens when I press

Start with the simplest thing: is the umbrella fully tensioned? On an automatic folding umbrella, the shaft must be pushed all the way back after the last use. If it stopped halfway, the spring isn’t armed and the button does nothing.

Then look at the locking pin : the small metal part that comes out of the handle and holds the slider. If it’s pushed in or clogged, the mechanism no longer engages. A drop of fine oil (sewing-machine oil, no WD-40 on the fabric) and a few back-and-forth movements often free it up.

It opens but no longer closes

On “open and close” models, the second press releases a second spring. If it doesn’t respond, first check that no rib is bent: a single jammed rib stops the whole system from folding.

Then close the umbrella by hand, rib by rib, without forcing on the centre.

It gets stuck halfway

It’s almost always the slider (the part that slides along the shaft) catching on corrosion. An umbrella stored wet for a week is enough to create this rust spot.

Open it fully, let it dry open for 24 hours, then slide the slider several times dry. If it still catches, a drop of fine oil on the rod, not on the canopy.

The button sinks into nothing

Here, the main spring or the locking pin has given way. It’s the only fault that can’t be repaired without a spare part. If the umbrella is less than two years old, this falls under the legal guarantee of conformity: write to the seller with a photo and your order number.

The three rules that prevent breakdowns

  1. Dry open after every rain, even for ten minutes.
  2. Never force the folding: if it resists, a rib is caught in the canopy.
  3. Push the handle all the way back before storing, so the spring stays properly armed.
