Folding umbrella: which one to choose
Mini, compact or large folding
Mini models fold down to around 18 cm and slip into a pocket. Classic folding umbrellas measure 28 to 32 cm, with a wider canopy and a sturdier frame. Large folding umbrellas measure more than 120 cm open and still fit in a backpack.
Number of folds
Three folds are the best compromise between size and strength. Five folds make a tiny umbrella, but the frame is slimmer: keep it as a back-up.
Manual or automatic
The automatic opens with one hand, which matters when you step out of the metro with a bag in the other. The manual one is lighter and has fewer moving parts.
