What size of umbrella for two people?
Below 120 cm in diameter, an umbrella covers one person and their bag. For two adults side by side, allow at least 130 cm, and 150 cm or more if you walk fast or the wind drives the rain sideways. Golf umbrellas, at around 185 cm, cover two people with room to spare.
Straight or folding
Large models are almost always straight: the shaft is 90 to 125 cm long and won’t fit in a bag. In return, the frame is sturdier and the handle more comfortable.
The weight
A large umbrella weighs from 600 g to 1.1 kg. It isn’t the one you carry all day: it’s the one you leave in the hallway, in the car or in the golf bag.
In the wind
The wider the canopy, the more wind it catches. On gusty days, a more compact storm umbrella holds up better.
